A package tour is organizing a trip consisting of small or big group. The traveling is done together throughout the tour.  The itinerary is prefixed and followed strictly. The tour is first announced by the organizing company who is in touch with a destination management company in the country to be visited.

Lot depends upon both the operators for the success of the tour. Once the requisite number of participants has reached the tour is announced. The destination management company then starts taking care of the ground handling services.

The ground work includes hotel accommodation, rail, bus and taxi booking. Sometimes destinations like tiger reserves, National Parks and bird sanctuaries have to be booked in advance. The tour is launched much in advance for perfect arrangements to be made. Air tickets if booked in advance are cheaper in countries like India. The group discounts given by the hotels also make the trip cheaper. Hence the benefit flows indirectly to the tourist making package travel quite economical.

The cost of the tour depends upon the luxuries. If the hotel is five star and traveling is by air or 1st class AC than the cost will definitely come high. The companies offer both types so that one can tour as per one’s choice.

The tour is handled by an escort or group leader throughout its course. The tour leader is appointed by the company after much deliberation. His travel experience, behavior and knowledge are all taken into account. He is required to have local knowledge of all the destinations in itinerary.

In specialized tours like birding, wildlife watching and culture, the tour leader should be the master of the subjected. If this is not the case than local guides are hired by the DMC everywhere.

The tour starts at the landing destination and continues from there onwards. Most of the long distance traveling is done in day time. The package is designed to cater to as many destinations as possible. The duration is usually fourteen days but the trips could be longer or shorter. There can be changes in itinerary depending upon the destination management company of the visited country.
